Scavino's Cannubi is a closed chapter. The family made it from 1985 until their last harvest there in 2018, so every bottle in circulation is all there will ever be. Their parcel is barely half a hectare on the central crest of the Cannubi hill, in the village of Barolo. It faces south/south-east at 290 meters, and it was planted in 1946, making it one of the estate's two oldest vineyards. Those old vines naturally keep yields low, and Scavino credits that for the concentration and richness this cru delivers. It's 100% Nebbiolo of the Michet sub-variety. Enrico Scavino first took on Cannubi in 1985 and now runs the house with his daughters, the fourth generation since Paolo Scavino founded it in Castiglione Falletto in 1921. A 2008 from this site is a chance to taste great Barolo history from a producer who no longer makes it, and it deserves a meal and an evening to match.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2008 Barolo Cannubi bursts from the glass with freshly cut flowers, black cherries, menthol and spices. It is a cool, reserved wine with plenty of Cannubi character. The 2008 is very young, but striking just the same. The delineation, textural elegance and complexity are all first-rate." —Antonio Galloni

"Maturing mid ruby with broad orange rim. Sweet, savoury cherry with a hint of mulch. A touch of nuttiness on the nose too. Lovely, supple fruit that is richly tannic and quite concentrated on the finish. Not ready by far."

Wine Spectator

"There's a sense of elegance here, a perfect foil for the floral, cherry, strawberry and underbrush aromas and flavors. Possesses a firm, sinewy structure, which will allow this to develop over the next 10 to 20 years."

More about Paolo Scavino

Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo founded this Castiglione Falletto winery in 1921. Enrico Scavino, who took charge in the early 1980s, turned it into one of Barolo's most acclaimed houses before his death in 2024, and his daughters Enrica and Elisa now carry it on. Some 30 hectares span around 20 Barolo crus, from Bric dël Fiasc and Cannubi to Monvigliero and Rocche dell'Annunziata. Elegant, polished Barolos that reward patience.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beef braised in Barolo, tajarin with shaved white truffle, roast veal shank, wild mushroom risotto, or aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Cannubi Barolo profile: red cherry, violet, licorice and a hint of tar, with the concentration and richness that old, low-yielding vines bring. Full-bodied, with firm but very fine-grained tannins and lively acidity, it finishes long and savoury. With bottle age, the style typically moves toward leather, truffle and dried herbs.
