Jim Prosser has been making lean, age-worthy Willamette Valley Pinot Noir since 1999 — back when nearly everyone else in Oregon was chasing riper, richer fruit — and Antoinette is the cuvée where that conviction goes furthest. It comes from the oldest, own-rooted vines at Temperance Hill, high up in the Eola-Amity Hills on ancient exposed basalt, a cool, late-ripening site that hands over old-vine depth without sacrificing acidity. Prosser calls it the most elegant of his single-vineyard bottlings, and it's named for his maternal grandmother; he's said that tasting it is the best description of what he's trying to do as a winemaker. Fermentation runs on native yeasts and oak is used sparingly — restraint rather than extraction, all the way through. It's light-bodied and built for the cellar, which is a rarer combination in Oregon Pinot than it should be. (The wasp on the label, in case you wondered, is a family joke about Prosser's severe allergy to them.)

"The 2022 Pinot Noir Antoinette is spicy, revealing a white pepper tinge to its blue and purple florals as dusty black cherries come to the foreground. Cool-toned and lifted in feel, this washes across the palate with violet-laced wild berry fruits as a note of blood orange adds lovely contrast toward the close. Inner rose tones and incense hover over a bed of fine-grained tannins and a blackberry concentration as this finishes dramatically long and wonderfully refined. Wow." —Eric Guido

More about J.K. Carriere

Jim Prosser has been making lean, age-worthy Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley since 1999, when most Oregon producers were still chasing ripe fruit. Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

Appellation

Willamette Valley

Wine Type

Red

Varietals

Pinot Noir

Vineyard

Temperance Hill’s (30-year-old) late-harvested and cooler high-elevation vines deliver old vine complexity with fresh acidity. The five best barrels became this wine. The vines are from the front block east, the oldest at Temperance, and their massive root systems go deep to deliver both high flavor and nuance to the limited yield.

Soil

Ancient, exposed basalt soils

Vinification

Small-lot wild yeast fermentations

Aging

100% barrel aged for 19 months in French oak barrels (one new, three neutral). Bottled unfined and unfiltered

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherries, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon with lentils, coq au vin, or a plate of charcuterie and aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied and transparent, with red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry aromas alongside forest floor and a little savory spice. Bright, fresh acidity and fine, gently gripping tannins keep it lively rather than plush; oak sits in the background. The finish is long, dry and mineral, with a stony edge from the volcanic soils.
