If you want to know why grower Champagne obsessives whisper the name Lassaigne, start here. Emmanuel Lassaigne farms Chardonnay on Montgueux, an isolated chalk hill near Troyes that grows white grapes so fine the locals compare the site to the Cote des Blancs. This is his flagship 'apero' cuvee, a Blanc de Blancs blended across many parcels and several vintages to capture the pure Montgueux signature. Organically farmed, wild-fermented, aged in barrel, with almost no dosage, it's taut, racy, and chalk-driven from start to finish. The perfect gateway into one of Champagne's great cult growers.

"The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Vignes de Montgueux is a pure Chardonnay from Montgueux with base wines from 2019 to 2021. Lemon, chalk and a distant notion of gingerbread on the nose lead onto a palate that brims with lemony brightness with a more definite, muscular touch of tar. A bright saltiness pervades the wine, lending it a sense of sitting upright, keeping poise and tension with its lovely Chardonnay that plays exquisitely between light and shade, between lemon brightness and black tar. Wonderful contrast." —Antonio Galloni

"Disgorged by hand for our July 2025 tasting, the most recent release of Lassaigne’s NV Blanc de Blancs Les Vignes de Montgueux is predominantly based on the 2022 vintage, supplemented with reserves from 2021 and 2020. It is vinified exclusively in tank and incorporates 40% purchased fruit—sourced slightly farther afield than Lassaigne’s own holdings but planted entirely to massal-selection Chardonnay. It unfurls in the glass with aromas of pear, peach and spring blossoms, subtly framed by the reductive imprint of its recent disgorgement. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied and concentrated, with a charmingly fleshy mid-palate, girdled by racy acidity and culminating in a long, saline finish. Characteristically, a significant portion derives from the upper section of the estate’s Le Cotet vineyard, planted between 1964 and 1967." —Kristaps Karklins

"The nose of this blanc de blancs is appealingly ripe but not overly so, with a pleasant balance of apple, lemon peel and apricot touched with a gentle note of autolysis. The texture of the mousse is creamy, and the feel is supple and silky without any heaviness. The base wines are one-third each from 2017, 2018 and 2019. Grapes are blended from sources throughout the village and aged on the lees in tank and barrel for more than a year before tirage. Delicious. Drink 2022 - 2030." —Charles Curtis MW

More about Jacques Lassaigne

Emmanuel Lassaigne, the current steward, restored credibility to Montgueux—Champagne's once-forgotten terroir at the region's edge. He ferments with native yeast only, disgorges by hand, and adds minimal sulfur. The fruit-forward, mineral-driven Champagnes he makes feel like the region's secret finally being told.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
