Jacques Lassaigne, Champagne Rose Extra Brut Les Vignes de Montgueux [2023], NV

Lassaigne's rose takes the same wild, chalk-driven Chardonnay that made him a cult grower in Montgueux and gives it a fruity, rose-tinted twist. This is a rose d'assemblage, not a saignee: a base of old-vine Chardonnay, for freshness and tension, blended with a splash of Pinot Noir vinified as red wine for color and berry aromatics. Organically farmed, wild-fermented, and dosed barely at all, it keeps the mineral cut and salinity that define everything Emmanuel Lassaigne makes. A grower rose with genuine energy, not just a pretty color.

"Crafted in the same spirit as the white version of Les Vignes de Montgueux yet enriched with 15% barrel-aged red wine, the NV Les Vignes de Montgueux RosΓ©β€”principally from the 2022 vintage and complemented by reserve wines from 2021 and 2020β€”was disgorged by hand for our July 2025 tasting. It bursts from the glass with an expressive bouquet of wild raspberry, Timut pepper and cherry. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, vinous and seductive, with a deep core of fruit and a delicate tannic presence, energized by vibrant acidity and concluding with a slightly perfumed, lingering finish. When tasted alongside its Blanc de Blancs counterpart, the presence of Pinot Noir asserts itself unmistakably." β€”Kristaps Karklins

More about Jacques Lassaigne

Emmanuel Lassaigne, the current steward, restored credibility to Montgueuxβ€”Champagne's once-forgotten terroir at the region's edge. He ferments with native yeast only, disgorges by hand, and adds minimal sulfur. The fruit-forward, mineral-driven Champagnes he makes feel like the region's secret finally being told.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producersβ€”farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
