JM Seleque, Champagne Brut Solessence (2022 base), NV

A grower-Champagne built around a perpetual reserve — the kind of quiet technical detail that explains why J.M. Sélèque has become one of the most-watched names in the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay. Jean-Marc Sélèque farms across seven villages around his home base of Pierry, and his Solessence cuvée is the calling card: half current vintage (2022 base), half drawn from a perpetual reserve that's been topped up and drawn from year after year, building layered, deeply seasoned complexity. The blend leans Chardonnay (50%) with Meunier and Pinot Noir filling out, aged on lees in a mix of stainless and old oak, finished as an Extra Brut with about 1.5 g/L dosage. Bone-dry, terroir-transparent, and seriously delicious.

Robert Parker

91 points

"Based on the 2022 vintage and enhanced by 50% reserve wines aged in a perpetual reserve initiated in 2004, Sélèque’s NV Extra Brut Solessence exudes a bouquet of ripe citrus, peach and freshly baked bread. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, broad and textural, with a generous core of fruit underpinned by ripe yet lively acidity, exhibiting a phenolic structure and an assertive bitterness on the finish. Vinified in equal parts stainless steel and oak, it was disgorged in August 2024 with a dosage of 1.5 grams per liter. The blend comprises nearly equal proportions of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, with an additional 10% Pinot Noir." —Kristaps Karklins

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Sleek and finely meshed, this vibrant Champagne offers well-honed acidity that defines fla- vors of grainy pear, blood orange granita, golden raisin, Marcona almond and grated ginger, ending with a chalky finish. Chardonnay, Meunier and Pinot Noir."

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"The main non-vintage cuvée from this young producer who is based just south of Épernay is dry in the house style, giving the tense and finely structured fruit plenty of space to speak. This is a tightly wrought Champagne but one with such great white- and citrus-fruit flavors that it is ready to drink."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters on the half shell, gougères straight from the oven, fried chicken with hot sauce, sushi and sashimi, or roast chicken with crispy skin and a side of buttered leeks.

Tasting Profile

Lemon zest, green apple, toasted brioche, blanched almond, white flower, and a chalky, oyster-shell mineral undercurrent. Light-to-medium body, persistent fine bead, bone-dry finish thanks to the low dosage, and a long, saline echo.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
