Julien Sunier got his start working for Christophe Roumier in Burgundy, and the fingerprint never washed off. He farms high-elevation granite parcels in Beaujolais organically and vinifies in the traditional semi-carbonic way, which gives his Cru Bojo a cool, refined edge that most Gamay never finds. His Fleurie is the floral one: perfumed, light on its feet, with cool-toned red fruit and a fine-grained, almost Pinot-like frame. It can be a little reserved when you first pour it, so give it two minutes in the glass and let it unfurl. Sunier has been a Flatiron favorite for years, and the 2023 is a very good reminder why.

"The 2023 Fleurie comes from vines on partly granitic and sable/Limoneau soils. This has the most floral bouquet of the range, with raspberry and Morello cherries, touches of bergamot and light loamy scents. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh with crisp and quite strict tannins, but perhaps does not have the same complexity as the Morgon on the finish. Still, this is very fine." —Neal Martin

More about Julien Sunier

Julien was introduced to the winemaking world by none other than Christophe Roumier, a client of Julien's mother's hair salon. After working with Christophe he went to New Zealand and California to continue his winemaking studies (and surf). For about a decade now Julien has been refining his own small domaine in Beaujolais, with holdings in some of the top crus. He has always farmed organically, and is now fully certified. His wines have gained widespread praise and are much loved in both the Natural Wine and Old-School Beaujolais circles.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

Varietals

Gamay

Vineyard

At almost 500 m in elevation, the steeply pitched parcel of “Niagara” is the source of Julien’s Fleurie cuvée. Planted in the early 1960s to a density of 10000 vines per hectare.

Orientation

Southern oriented

Soil

Mother rock of pure pink granite with little topsoil, the parcel is rocky and a challenge to work.

Viticulture

Organic farming, harvesting done entirely by hand.

Vinification

Indigenous yeast fermentations in concrete vats at low temperatures, to preserve fresh fruit flavors and a delicate tannic structure. After fermentations are complete, fruit is slowly pressed, over a 24 hour period, using an ancient vertical press Julien acquired in the Côte D’Or.

Aging

Aged for up to 11 months in 3 - 9 year old Burgundy barrels so the charming fruit and granitic soil flavors aren't lost.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken, charcuterie, duck breast, mushroom risotto, or a very good burger.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied and dry. Violets and red cherry, cool-toned red fruit, fine-grained tannins, granite lift.

Fruit purity and a little funk

The wine has a tart fruit purity with strawberry, cranberry and raspberry primary fruit and a slight barnyard funk suggesting a wild yeast meets low SO2 winemaking style. This wine is your childhood friend's cool older sister that toured with the Dead in the late 80s but then got a "respectable" white collar gig in design after college.
