Sourced from the legendary Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador County, Newfound’s 2022 Syrah is a standout example of how California can channel Syrah’s wilder, more soulful side. Matt Naumann farms and vinifies with a light hand—whole cluster fermentation, native yeasts, neutral oak—all in service of transparency and energy.

The result is a wine that opens with dark fruit, cracked pepper, lavender, and a hint of smoked meat. The palate is savory and taut, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity, and a backbone that gives it shape without heaviness. There’s a Rhône-like perfume—violets, garrigue, olive tapenade—but with California clarity and just a touch of sunshine in the fruit.

Matt Naumann spent ten years managing Ehren Jordan's Sonoma Coast ranch at Failla before he and his wife, Audra Chapman, struck out on their own. In 2016 they bought a 40-acre ranch in El Dorado County in the Sierra Foothills and started over, pulling out the old vines. While the estate comes of age, they buy from like-minded growers in Mendocino, Sonoma and Napa for wines like the Gravels red. Small, carefully farmed, and staying small on purpose.
