Writer's Block is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah from screenwriter Robert Kamen's mountain estate. Kamen, the writer behind The Karate Kid, Taken and The Fifth Element, bought his Sonoma mountain land in 1980 and farms it organically and biodynamically, 1,450 feet up on the Sonoma side of Mount Veeder in fractured volcanic rock. That high-elevation mountain fruit gives this red real depth and a mineral, stony backbone you don't get from valley-floor vines. It's a bold, structured crowd-pleaser with a genuinely good story behind it. Decant and pour with dinner.

More about Kamen

Kamen might have the best origin story in Sonoma. In 1980 Robert Mark Kamen, who went on to write The Karate Kid, sold his first screenplay and bought a rugged, volcanic stretch of the Mayacamas Mountains on the Sonoma side of Mount Veeder. Then he went looking for the man who had grown the marijuana he and his friends were smoking. That man was Phil Coturri, and Kamen hired him to farm the land.

Coturri became one of the leading figures in California organic and biodynamic viticulture, and Kamen has been his showcase ever since. Only a fraction of the large, wild property is planted, on steep slopes of fractured volcanic rock in what is now the Moon Mountain District. The vineyard was replanted in 1996 after a fire, it is certified organic, and cover crops share the rows with the vines for half the year.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship. It's joined by Syrah, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc and Writer's Block, a red blend. Expect true mountain wines: dark-fruited, firmly built and worth cellaring.
