If you want to understand what Croatian Istria can do with its indigenous red, start here. Kožlović is fourth-generation family winery — Gianfranco and Antonella took the reins in 1998 — working hillside vineyards of "terra bianca" (white clay) in the Vale valley near the medieval village of Momjan, near the Slovenian border in northern Istria. Teran is the peninsula's signature red, a cousin of Refosco with a famously deep purple color, racy acidity, and savory edge. Kožlović's version is hand-harvested and built for the table rather than the cellar: think crunchy black cherry, plum, wild herbs, a flash of black pepper, and a mineral-driven finish that nods to the salty Adriatic just a few miles away. A red that goes from grilled fish to roast lamb without breaking stride — and a great introduction to one of Europe's most underexplored wine regions.
