A grower Champagne blending Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier from a single Premier Cru village. Laurent Benard is a grower in Mareuil-sur-Ay, in the Vallee de la Marne, farming just under three hectares organically and biodynamically. This cuvee is blended from several parcels including the lieu-dit Les Sept Arpents — the name means the key to the seven arpents, an arpent being an old unit of land roughly equal to an acre — on shallow topsoil over chalk and clay, and the wine keeps its detail through natural fermentation, long aging on the lees, and a near-zero Extra Brut dosage. The 'R22' marks a base of the 2022 harvest. This is grower Champagne at its purest: transparent, saline, and built to show a single site rather than a house style.

Antonio Galloni

"The NV Extra Brut Le Clef de Sept Arpents Premier Cru is a blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier with 30% of a perpetual reserve started in 2012 and aged in foudre. Mirabelle-scented fruitiness is fragrant on the nose. The palate has the appealing tart freshness of a ripe cider apple, not an euphemism for cider overtones at all but describing the slight astringency of tart apples. While the foam is frothy and youthful, the underlying fruit has pristine freshness and fizzes away with its inherent and beautifully tart brightness, showing gentle rye crumb autolysis. Clean-cut and classy. Watch this name." —Antonio Galloni

"Disgorged in October 2024 with a dosage of 1.3 grams per liter, Bénard’s 2021-based NV La Clé des Sept Arpents, enriched by 55% reserve wines maintained as a perpetual cuvée since 2012, is a blend composed of 70% Pinot Noir, with the remainder evenly divided between Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Sourced from three villages—Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay-Val-d’Or and Mutigny—and vinified in nearly equal proportions of wood and tank, it opens with an expressive bouquet of pear, fresh citrus fruit, early-blooming white flowers and peach. Medium-bodied, vibrant and racy, it features a delicate, pillowy mid-palate and concludes with a citrus-inflected finish. While many 2021 cuvées lean toward austerity, this rendition achieves harmony and balance, thanks in large part to its generous inclusion of reserve wines." —Kristaps Karklins

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
