Mainova takes its name from the Portuguese "a mais nova"—the youngest—for Bárbara Monteiro, the youngest of three sisters whose family runs this estate in the sun-drenched Alentejo. It's a warm, generous southern Portuguese red, built from local heavy-hitters: Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional and Baga, fermented on wild yeasts and aged briefly in old French oak. The style is minimal-intervention and low-key—dark fruit, a lick of pepper and eucalyptus, and just enough structure to keep things honest. An easygoing weeknight red with a real sense of place.
