Marcel Deiss does something almost no one else in Alsace dares: he co-plants and co-ferments multiple grapes in a single vineyard, letting the site speak instead of the grape. Engelgarten, a 1er Cru just outside Bergheim's medieval walls, interweaves Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Muscat on alluvial gravels mixed with clay and marl, all farmed biodynamically. The gravel drives the vines to real ripeness while a September water deficit keeps yields tiny and flavors concentrated. Whole-cluster pressed, fermented on wild yeast and aged a year in foudre, it is a dry, mineral, multidimensional white that tastes of place rather than variety. Decant it and give it food.

"The 2024 Engelgarten, from alluvial gravels mixed with clay and marl in Bergheim, is a field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Muscat. It is shyer and more restrained than usual. This is wonderfully stony and pebbly, like wet rocks. It is totally stony and long, with far more citrus than usual but with the same insistent, lasting saltiness, bathed in lemon. A wonderful iteration of this angel's garden." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Marcel Deiss

Jean-Michel and Mathieu Deiss run this 26-hectare Alsatian estate that's been in the family since 1744. They're famous for biodynamic field blends of Riesling, Pinot gris, and Gewurztraminer—and in 2005, convinced the French authorities to allow these blends from Grand Cru sites without labeling grape types. Rule-breakers in the best way.
