2010 was the year Champagne would rather forget — a dry start, then rain at exactly the wrong moment, with rot that forced growers to cut away huge amounts of fruit — which is precisely why a bottling from a two-hectare grower who did all her own sorting by hand is worth seeking out. Marie-Noëlle Ledru farmed her Ambonnay Grand Cru Pinot Noir without herbicides or pesticides and retired after the 2016 harvest, so nothing more is coming. "Goulté" is local dialect for the first-run juice off the press, the best fraction of the pressing, and this cuvée is 100% Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs from her finest mid-slope parcels: fermented in steel and enamel with no oak, allowed to complete malolactic fermentation instead of being locked down with sulfur, never filtered or cold-stabilized, roughly five years on the lees, hand-riddled and hand-disgorged at very low dosage. The vintage's signature is power rather than acidity, and at this age that reads as a broad, deep, gently mellowed Champagne. From a private cellar; drink it now.
