Lebanon's own grape, made the old way: 70% Merweh, an indigenous white with thick skins and refreshing acidity, fermented on those skins in clay amphorae. Thick skins are what you want in a skin-contact wine, which is why Merweh suits the orange treatment so well. Chardonnay makes up the other 30%. The grapes are picked by hand on the high hillsides of Mount Lebanon, 1,200 to 1,700 meters up, farmed with biodynamic practices, crushed by foot and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Brothers Sami and Ramzi Ghosn are behind it. Their family abandoned its Beqaa property at the outbreak of civil war, and when the brothers came back in the early 1990s they made arak before they made wine. Then a chance meeting with a cork salesman led them to Dominique Hébrard of Château Cheval Blanc and the Brunier family of Vieux Télégraphe. Fittingly for a wine this color, Massaya is Lebanese Arabic for "twilight." If you like orange wine and want to try something off the usual path, start here.

More about Massaya

Lebanese wine from the Beqaa Valley—made possible because two brothers and a pair of French wine families decided that rebuilding a country's wine tradition was worth the gamble. Sami and Ramzi Ghosn partnered with Châteauneuf-du-Pape's Bruniers and Saint-Émilion's Hebrards to craft Grenache-based reds that prove Lebanon's terroir is as serious as the region's history is complicated.

Sustainably farmed utilizing biodynamic practices

Hand harvested

Gently crushed under human weight

Fermented on the skins in clay amphorae

Bottled unfined and unfiltered

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A Lebanese mezze spread: labneh with za'atar and olive oil, fattoush, muhammara, grilled halloumi. It also works with chicken shawarma with garlic toum, or baked kibbeh.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic skin-contact profile: dried apricot, orange peel and bruised apple, with herbal, lightly nutty and tea-like notes. Amphora fermentation typically gives a textured, medium-bodied palate with gentle tannic grip, lifted by the bright acidity of high-altitude fruit, and a dry, savoury finish. Because it's bottled unfined and unfiltered, a slight haze is normal.
