When Cos d'Estournel's technical director and the head sommelier of La Réserve Paris sat down with the 2014, the words they came up with were elephant, peacock, caraway, incense and the Taj Mahal. That fits an estate whose founder, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, came up with the idea of an Asian-inspired palace in 1820 and travelled as far as India to sell his wine. The exotic flair sits on serious Saint-Estèphe ground. Cos was classified a Second Growth in 1855, and its name comes from the old Gascon for "hill of pebbles." Gravel is the main soil in its vineyard at the edge of the Saint-Estèphe plateau. At Cos, 2014 was a late vintage that finished with a sunny September. The blend leans hard on Cabernet Sauvignon (65%, with 33% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc), and the estate's view is that this year's Cabernet fully expresses the Cos terroir. Technical director Dominique Arangoïts calls it a great wine that you can enjoy early but that also has strong potential to evolve. That makes it a classed growth you don't have to bury for decades before opening. Follow the estate's own advice: pull the cork about two hours before serving and skip the decanter.

Robert Parker

"A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2014 Cos d'Estournel has a deep garnet-purple color and is a little closed at this stage, offering slowly emerging scents of fresh blackcurrants, black plums and blackberries plus nuances of pencil shavings, dried lavender, bay leaves and fertile loam with a waft of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, it has a generous mid-palate of muscular, youthful fruit with a firm frame of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and savory."

"Tasted blind. Very deep crimson. Clean, fresh attack. Very rich and smooth and worked. Intense and attention-grabbing. Sweeter and plummier than some – which is arguably not an attribute in a St-Estèphe." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Intense, with a roiling core of luscious loganberry, blackberry and black currant fruit. Singed spice, apple wood and black tea accents emerge steadily on the finish. Has a rare combination of density and precision. Will cruise in the cellar. Best from 2020 through 2035." —James Molesworth

Wine Enthusiast

"This is an immensely dense wine that is going to be a classic. The dark tannins are still lined with wood aging but that will go because the fruit underneath is also just as dense and intense. Blackberry, black plum and damson plum give power and sweetness. This is a great wine with huge potential. Drink from 2028."

More about Chateau Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe's exotic showstopper. Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel earned the title 'Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe' through sheer ambition—and the Oriental pagodas still stand as proof. Michel Reybier has transformed it into fully organic excellence. Impossible to ignore.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck glazed with honey and warm spices, in the spirit of the Apicius duck La Réserve Paris's head sommelier suggested for this vintage. Rack of lamb crusted with cumin and caraway, or a lamb and apricot tagine, would also play up the wine's exotic side.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied, dense and aromatically rich, with an exotic lean toward caraway and incense. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, and the wine feels powerful but energetic rather than heavy, with an elegant overall shape. Complex already, with plenty in reserve to keep developing.
