It says Bourgogne on the label, but the fruit comes from Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. Bouzereau makes this Chardonnay from the lieux-dits Magny and Sous la Velle in Meursault and Champs Perriers in Puligny, all on clay-limestone soils, and some of the vines were planted as far back as 1957. Grapes from addresses like that usually end up in more expensive bottles, which makes this one of the smartest ways into a serious Meursault cellar. The family has made wine in Meursault for seven generations. Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau has run the domaine since 1999, has farmed organically since 2005 and has been moving toward biodynamics without bothering to get certified. In the cellar he takes a patient, hands-off approach: native yeasts, time in barrel on the fine lees, then bottling unfined and unfiltered with very little sulfur. The domaine suggests serving it at 10-12°C and drinking it anywhere from six months to five or six years out.

"The 2024 Bourgogne Côte d'Or is 60% from Meursault and 40% from Puligny. This has a light but pretty nose with pressed yellow flowers unfolding in the glass. The palate is well balanced with slightly lower acidity than its peers but I appreciate the waxy texture and prickle of spice on the finish. Early drinking." —Neal Martin

More about Michel Bouzereau

Seven generations of Meursault winemaking converge in Michel Bouzereau's estate. He was president of the Burgundy Growers Union and a fierce traditionalist. His son Jean-Baptiste now steers the ship from their new winery (built 2009), commanding some of the Côte de Beaune's top parcels. This family's credentials aren't just credentials—they're a philosophy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon cream sauce, sole meunière, gougères, wild mushroom risotto, aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect a Côte de Beaune Chardonnay with real Meursault character: ripe orchard fruit and lemon, a hint of hazelnut from barrel ageing, and a creamy, rounded texture from long lees contact. Clay-limestone soils typically bring a chalky, mineral line and fresh acidity, finishing dry and savoury. Think of it as a junior Meursault.
