Six generations of Vosne-Romanée know-how in an entry-level appellation, and this bottle has now had more than a decade to show what that's worth. The estate's Hautes-Côtes vines grow around Arcenant, a small village in the Meuzin valley about 7 km west of Nuits-Saint-Georges, in hills behind the famous slope. Phylloxera wiped those hills out at the end of the 19th century, and unlike the Côte below, nobody replanted them until the early 1970s. Michel's father, Jean Gros, was one of the first to lead that revival. We have history with this wine: years ago our founders drank Michel's 1990 Hautes-Côtes Rouge and found themselves comparing it to Richebourg in their notes. We won't promise that from every bottle, but an aged Gros Hautes-Côtes is a modest, honest way to see what time does to serious Burgundy without paying grand cru prices.

"Mid crimson. Rather farmyard nose. Pretty rustic and chewy. Not really a wine I would suggest buying en primeur. Fades pretty fast." —Jancis Robinson MW

More about Michel Gros

Six generations of Vosne-Romanée skill distilled into entry-level magic. Michel Gros' village wines deliver the freshness and minerality that make you fall in love with Burgundy before spending serious money. The domaine has held the monopoly on Clos des Réas since 1860—one of Burgundy's great-estate benchmarks—but it's the approachable bottlings that let everyone in on the secret: Gros knows how to make Pinot sing.
