Côte de Nuits-Villages with old-vine depth. Patrice Rion sits in Premeaux-Prissey, one of the five communes whose vines can be bottled as Côte de Nuits-Villages — and his Vieilles Vignes cuvée draws on the older parcels, giving a wine with more weight and concentration than the appellation usually delivers. Patrice founded the domaine in 1990 with Michèle; son Maxime came aboard in 2005 and now runs the cellar. 2023 brought ripe, generous Côte de Nuits reds with good freshness — a vintage where the appellation tier suddenly looks very compelling. Drink over the next five to eight years; this is the kind of red Burgundy that rewards a small carafe.

"This is aromatically similar to the Bon Bâtons but with notably more spice influence. The supple, delicious and energetic medium weight flavors possess a highly seductive, even velvety, texture while displaying very good length and depth on the balanced bitter pit fruit-inflected finish." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Côte de Nuits-Villages comprises two-thirds fruit purchased from Clombanchien, and the rest Domaine fruit from En Luret lieu-dit. Blackcurrant and raspberry combine nicely on the nose, not concentrated per se, yet showing decent clarity and purity. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly granular texture on the entry, lightly peppered though there are no stems in the blend. Focused and harmonious toward the finish, this is a worthy follow-up to the 2022." —Neal Martin

More about Michele & Patrice Rion

Here's a Côte de Nuits address with something most of its neighbors can't offer: a monopole premier cru clos, a rare Nuits-Saint-Georges white, and vines across three of the Côte's great villages. The wines are precise and honest, and they speak clearly of their sites.

Patrice and Michèle Rion started the domaine in 1990 with vines they owned themselves. Patrice was the winemaker at his family's estate, Domaine Daniel Rion, until 2000, when he went out on his own and built a cellar and winery at Premeaux-Prissey, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges. In 2006 the couple bought the monopole Clos Saint-Marc, a Nuits premier cru previously made by Bouchard Père & Fils, along with Chardonnay in Les Terres Blanches. Their son Maxime joined in 2005 after oenology studies in Dijon and has gradually taken over the running of the place. The domaine began converting to organic farming in 2020.

The range runs from Bourgogne and Côte de Nuits-Villages Vieilles Vignes to village and premier cru Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Grapes are double-sorted, and the top reds get a portion of whole clusters. Look out for Les Terres Blanches, a premier cru white of Chardonnay with about ten percent Pinot Blanc, and the dense, slow-to-open Clos Saint-Marc.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Mushroom tart, roast duck with cherries, beef stew, lamb shanks braised with red wine, or a board of Burgundian cheeses. A short carafe brings out the depth.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry, plum, a touch of cured meat, forest floor, and warm earth. Medium-bodied with old-vine concentration, dusty tannins, and a long finish that says Premeaux.
