The Mocali estate was founded in 1956 by Dino Ciacci, who was one of the 25 founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in 1967. Now in its third generation under Tiziano Ciacci and his wife Alessandra. Located in the Tavernelle area southwest of Montalcino at 300-400 meters elevation on marly limestone and iron-rich red silt soils. The Raunate Riserva comes from their oldest vines and is only produced in select years. It ages 4 years in 400-liter French oak tonneaux. Limited production of approximately 2,000 bottles.

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Raunate pulls the taster close to the glass to take in its hauntingly dark bouquet. Cedar shavings, sage, white smoke, blackberry, tobacco and clove are all featured in the glass. This is elegance to the extreme, creamy, nearly velvety, with ripe red and black fruits complicated by inner sage and hints of cocoa. A bump of zesty acidity keeps the energy high even as this finishes tannic and potent. It has a staining of primary concentration that will unfurl over time. The balance and concentration here are remarkable, yet patience will be necessary." —Eric Guido
