Scarecrow's Rutherford vineyard, Scarecrow's winemaker, and considerably more of it. M. Etain - pronounced Monsieur Etain - comes off the J.J. Cohn Estate, the Rutherford property bought in 1943 by the MGM executive behind The Wizard of Oz and planted to Cabernet two years later; the flagship wine is named in his honour, and etain is the French word for tin. Celia Welch has made the wines here since the first Scarecrow in 2003. The 2023 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, hand-harvested at night in mid-October, fermented in small lots with about twelve days on the skins, then raised in French oak, 60% of it new, for roughly a year before the blend was assembled and returned to barrel for seven more months. It was bottled in April 2025, with 2,600 cases made - far more than the few hundred cases of Scarecrow itself. Give it several hours of air now, or put it away for a decade.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and dark. Ripe blue and purple fruit with vanilla and baking spice from the oak, a broad, smooth texture, and thick, velvety tannins carrying a long finish.
