More about Mocali

Mocali is old-school Montalcino in the best sense: a family estate with a seat at the founding table of the Brunello consortium, making Sangiovese aged in big casks rather than new barriques.

Dino Ciacci bought the farm, southwest of the town of Montalcino, in the 1950s, when it grew grain, raised sheep for cheese and made olive oil as much as wine. In 1967 he was one of the 25 growers who founded the Consorzio del Brunello. The turn toward Brunello came after the brutal frost of 1985 killed many of the area's olive trees: his grandson Tiziano Ciacci and Tiziano's wife, Alessandra Mililotti, replanted the groves with vines, and their first Mocali Brunello was the 1990 vintage. Their daughter Pamela has since joined them.

The vineyards lie at about 350 to 400 meters on marl and limestone, including a lime-rich local stone called Balsano, and the estate is farmed organically. The Brunello ages only in large French and Slavonian oak casks. Beyond it come a Rosso di Montalcino, a Riserva, and the Raunate bottlings from a single favored parcel, built for the long haul. Expect classic Brunello: red cherry, earth and dried herbs, firm acidity, and tannins that reward patience.
