Domaine des Ardoisières is one of the great Savoie revival stories — steep alpine slopes of black schist (ardoise means slate) reclaimed and farmed by hand, biodynamically, at the foot of the Alps. Rhodonite is their rosé, a single-varietal Gamay direct-pressed from a later-ripening parcel and made with no added sulfur during fermentation. The slate soils give it a mineral cut you rarely find in pink wine, and the altitude keeps it taut and refreshing. This is rosé with a mountain address and a spine to match.

More about Domaine des Ardoisieres

Les Ardoisières is the estate that brought a lost Alpine hillside back to life, becoming a reference point for modern Savoie wine. Ardoise means slate, and the name tells you what's underfoot.

The Coteau de Cevins, a steep slope in the valley leading up to Albertville, once grew vines, but they disappeared and the hill lay abandoned. In the late 1990s the local mayor, Denis Perroux, set out to replant it with Michel Grisard, a pioneer of biodynamic farming in Savoie, and the domaine was born in 1998. Brice Omont, a Champagne native, joined in 2005 and now runs the estate. The terraced Cevins vines, on slopes of up to 60%, grow in old mica schist, loam and sand. Since 2008 the domaine has also farmed clay-limestone and schist at Saint-Pierre-de-Soucy, for about 16 hectares in all.

The farming is biodynamic and yields are tiny. The wines are built from the Alps' own grapes: Altesse in Quartz, a Jacquère-led white blend in Schiste, Persan and Mondeuse in the red Améthyste, and the Argile red and white from Soucy. The Maison des Ardoisières label, home to the Silice wines, works with bought-in grapes such as Jacquère from Apremont. Expect pure, taut, mineral wines with real mountain freshness, and more capacity to age than Savoie usually gets credit for.
