At 12.5% alcohol, the 2023 West Ridge is Hirsch's lightest-bodied Pinot Noir, made in the coolest, longest growing season the estate has seen in decades. That's exactly why it's worth stashing away. Budbreak came four to six weeks late, harvest was the latest since the 1990s, and the grapes got fully ripe at low sugar levels. The result is a wine the Hirsch team says has an Old World quality, and a pointed answer to anyone who thinks California Pinot has to be big. The heart of the wine is Block 7, planted in 1992 with massale cuttings David Hirsch took from Mount Eden Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. That lineage goes back to the Burgundy cuttings Paul Masson brought over in the late 1800s. These biodynamically farmed vines grow in heavy black clay that stresses them and holds back their vigor, less than three miles from the Pacific in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. Light doesn't mean fleeting: West Ridge ages surprisingly well (David Hirsch calls the mature wine "romantic"), and the family compares this vintage to its 2010, saying it can age into something ethereal and fragrant. Give it two to three years in the cellar, or if you can't wait, a few hours of air.

More about Hirsch Vineyards

David Hirsch fell in love with Burgundy in the 1970s, then set out to translate that dream into Sonoma Coast terroir. Since 1980, he's planted a vineyard so fragmented (67 individual blocks) that it rivals Burgundy's own subdivision. All farmed biodynamically since 2011 with no machines, his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay capture the Sonoma Coast's bracing minerality and elegance—a love letter to place.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast quail with sage brown butter; seared duck breast with pomegranate sauce; cedar-plank salmon; wild mushroom risotto; roast chicken with herbs and lemon.

Tasting Profile

Pomegranate, pomelo, sage and a salty, sea-air note on the nose. Light-bodied, delicate and almost fragile, with pure, juicy red fruit, electric acidity and very fine tannins. The finish is intensely mineral.
