If you want to know what Taurasi is meant to be, go to the house that kept it alive. Mastroberardino is the appellation's historic reference point, and the Radici Riserva is its flagship. The wine comes from a single vineyard at the top of the family's Montemarano estate, in the southernmost part of the Taurasi DOCG: stony, chalky clay facing south-east, on an estate that climbs from 500 to 650 meters. Up there, warm days and cold nights slow ripening so much that the Aglianico is usually not picked until November. That late harvest gives the wine fine tannins, firm acidity and a long life. Until the 1990s the Mastroberardinos were almost alone in Irpinia in defending its native grapes, and much of the region's standing today is Antonio Mastroberardino's doing. The 2015 now has a decade behind it, and it's a serious, structured southern Italian red for anyone who loves Barolo and wants to see what Aglianico can do.

More about Mastroberardino

Founded in 1878, Mastroberardino is Taurasi's historic reference point. Brothers Antonio and Walter refused to abandon Aglianico after WWII when everyone else was planting bulk varieties. Their Radici bottling essentially started the red-wine revolution of southern Italy. This is heritage that means something.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Slow-cooked Neapolitan beef ragù over ziti; braised lamb shoulder or roast leg of lamb; wild boar or venison stew; porcini risotto or pasta with shaved truffle; aged pecorino and Caciocavallo with salumi.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Taurasi profile: dark cherry, plum and black fruit with savoury notes of leather, tobacco, earth, spice and a hint of tar. Full-bodied but taut, it typically has firm, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity from late-picked, high-altitude fruit, finishing long and savoury. Think of a darker, earthier cousin to Barolo, built for long ageing.
