A piece of California history in a bottle. This is the Travers-era Mayacamas, made before the 2013 sale to the Schottenstein/Forman/Banks group transformed the estate, and it comes from the high, rugged volcanic ridge of Mount Veeder, where Bob Travers spent decades crafting Cabernets that prized structure, restraint, and longevity over the lush Napa house style. The warm 2004 vintage gave him fruit of unusual generosity, and now, twenty-one years on, the wine is fully mature and showing all the tertiary nuance that vintage Mayacamas Cabernet is famous for. A drink-now collector's bottle for serious Napa devotees.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon is scheduled to be a 2018 library release from Mayacamas. A dark, powerful wine, the 2004 is burly, powerful and a bit rough around the edges, although certainly not lacking in personality, density or character. The aromatics are just beginning to show the first signs of complexity, but the fruit is still so vibrant and fresh. Firm tannins ensure the 2004 will drink well for decades to come. I am frankly amazed by how young the 2004 is today." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"The most mature of the several vintages tasted on this visit, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up hints of button mushrooms, mint and cassis on the nose, while the medium-bodied palate is still crisp and vibrant, finishing silky and long. Impressive." —Joe Czerwinski

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"A bit ungainly now, with massive red and black cherry flavors that burst out in jammy richness. But this is Mayacamas, whose Cabernets are built to last. The tannins are fierce, the acids entirely adequate to protect this wine through 2012, when it should begin to develop bottle character."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A simply seared dry-aged ribeye, rack of lamb with rosemary, or roast squab. Mushroom-forward sides flatter the wine's developing earthiness. Aged hard cheeses, but skip anything too rich or sauced.

Tasting Profile

Dried cassis, cedar box, tobacco leaf, dried sage, and forest floor mark a fully evolved nose. The palate is medium-bodied and graceful by modern Napa standards, with resolved tannins and a long savory finish. Drink soon; this is at its peak.
