From the Monte Bello ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains comes Ridge's Estate Chardonnay, the white companion to the Cabernet that famously placed in the red-wine flight at the 1976 Judgment of Paris (and went on to top the same field in the 30th-anniversary re-tasting). Paul Draper set the template; John Olney carries it forward today. The 2019 vintage delivered concentration with balance, and this wine shows it: think pale gold, citrus and green apple aromatics, salinity and crushed-stone minerality, with a creamy mid-palate from extended lees contact. Less buttery California Chardonnay, more old-vine mountain restraint. Drinking beautifully now, with another five-plus years of upside in the cellar.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Chardonnay Estate is super-elegant and precise. Scents of tangerine oil, mint, apricot and chamomile all grace this lithe, wonderfully expressive Chardonnay. Bright acids and a very slight touch of reduction frame the close. The Estate is made for near and medium-term drinking. I would prefer to open it well in advance though." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Big and rich, with concentrated baked pear, apple pastry and glazed apricot flavors that are luscious and well-spiced. The creamy finish is loaded with buttery plushness."

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"There's a flinty tone of struck stone and chiseled granite on the nose of this bottling, which also shows a singed lemon fragrance on the nose. There's a woody quality to the sip, giving some depth to the seared lime-peel, macadamia-nut and sprinkled sea-salt flavors." —Matt Kettmann

More about Ridge

Ridge's 1971 Monte Bello placed fifth in the 1976 Judgment of Paris—ahead of Mouton-Rothschild—, but the winery didn't let it go to their head. Forty-plus years later, they're still making structured, elegant Cabernet Sauvignons and Zinfandels from the windswept Santa Cruz Mountains. Pure California terroir, no flash.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A classic with roast chicken, Dover sole meuniere or scallops with brown butter. The mineral spine handles oysters and shellfish gracefully, while the creamy mid-palate flatters lobster ravioli or chicken pot pie.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and finely cut. Lemon zest, green apple, white peach and honeysuckle, lifted by wet stone and a salty finish. Creamy texture but driven by acidity rather than oak, with notes of toasted brioche and crushed almond on the long close.
