Giancarlo Pacenti took over from his father Siro and recast this Montalcino estate with vineyards on both the northern (Pelagrilli) and southern (Piancornello) sides of the appellation as one of the modern faces of Brunello, leaning into French barrique and ripe extraction without sacrificing site character. The Vecchie Vigne is the top cuvee, drawn from the estate's oldest parcels, and in the legendary 2010 vintage, that combination produced a Sangiovese of polished power and serious aging potential. Fifteen years on, this bottle is just beginning to integrate its components into something seamless. A modern Brunello in the best sense: confident, deeply fruited, and built for the long haul.

Antonio Galloni

"Giancarlo Pacenti’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne is another superb wine. The contours are more modern and the fruit leans towards the darker end of spectrum, yet all the elements are wonderfully in balance. Surprisingly open and expressive for a young Brunello, the 2010 is sure to improve with a little more time in the bottle. All of the Pacenti signatures are in place, though, and the house style is unmistakable." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

95 points

"Made from the estate's oldest vines, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a bold and powerful wine that shows enormous precision and grit. On the Brunello scale, this expression from Siro Pacenti offers more dark fruit, plum, spice, tar and smoke. The wine reveals beautiful density and an important mouthfeel that hits the palate with seductive determination. This wine is holding up beautifully since I tasted it last and has even improved in terms of its complexity and overall elegance. It still has a long way to go."

Wine Spectator

"This brooding version is lean and sinewy in profile, with dusty, chewy tannins gripping the cherry and strawberry fruit. This comes around with air, showing more sweetness and balance."

More about Siro Pacenti

Giancarlo Pacenti took over his family's Brunello estate in 1988 and immediately went against Montalcino tradition—he uses small French barriques for maturation, not the massive oak everyone else loves. His wines are elegant, pure, and totally counterintuitive. Exactly what Brunello needed.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled ribeye with rosemary, braised short ribs, or roast venison with juniper. Mushroom-and-truffle pasta plays beautifully into the wine's evolving secondary notes. Aged Parmigiano for the close.

Tasting Profile

Ripe black cherry, plum, and cedar wrap around polished oak spice and a hint of espresso. The palate is dense, glossy, and structured, with ripe tannins and a long, dark-fruited finish. Powerful but composed; decant an hour ahead.
