A rare white from the heart of Syrah country. Emmanuelle Verset planted this Viognier in 2015 in the lieu-dit Tracoles on the plains of Cornas, land that historically grew apricots, and the fruit shows it. Bottled as Vin de France, it's a small-production glimpse of the perfumed, fleshy side of the Northern Rhone from a sixth-generation grower farming organically with cover crops between the rows. Drink it young while its floral lift is at its peak.

More about A&E Verset

Emmanuelle Verset came home to Cornas to take the reins from her father, Alain, carrying on a name that still makes wine people whisper. Her great-uncle was the legendary Noël Verset, whose Champelrose parcels came to her, and from her grandfather Louis she inherited vines in Geynale and Les Mazards. She has converted the farming to organics and makes Cornas that tastes like it is made of stone and time and pure intention.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

Varietals

Viognier

Vineyard

Vines located in the lieu-dit of "Tracoles" on the plains of Cornas on the Right Bank of the Rhone River. Historically these lands produced apricots, but Verset planted this vineyard in 2015

Soil

Dominated by galets roulets or "rolled pebbles"

Viticulture

Practicing organic with emphasis on biodiversity. Wildflowers and assorted vegetation such as clover and grains are sowed between vine rows and then roller crimped to decompose and add nutrients back to the soil. The grapes are harvested manually and transported in small crates to the domaine.

Vinification

Pressing is done directly with a hydrolic “Vaslin” press. Settling is done cold with the start of alcoholic fermentation in vats. Temps are kept cool with stirring at the end of fermentation.Wine goes through malo.

Aging

Aged 7 months in 4-6 year-old 400L barrels from several French coopers.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast pork, creamy chicken dishes, Thai green curry, soft cheeses, grilled peaches with prosciutto.

Tasting Profile

Aromatic and floral with apricot, peach, and honeysuckle. Round and fleshy on the palate with gentle acidity and a soft, perfumed finish.
