O Campo farms volcanic, often ungrafted old vines in Tacoronte-Acentejo on Tenerife, one of the most singular wine zones on earth. Vijariego Negro is a rare Canary red grape that delivers freshness and lift rather than weight, and it's a great match for the island's volcanic soils. The 2022 is light on its feet, with red berry fruit, herbs, peppery spice, and a savory, smoky mineral edge. Serve with a slight chill for a red that's all energy and intrigue.

Robert Parker

90 points

"The red 2022 Vijariego Negro was produced with grapes from their own vines. It fermented with 30% full clusters in concrete and matured in 1,500-liter oak foudre and 500-liter oak barrels for 10 months. The reds have a creamy profile, as all the wood was new in 2022. It has more black than red fruit, different from the Vijariego elsewhere. It has plenty of tannins, more than usual (at least in other zones) that are going to require time in bottle. In future vintages, the oak should be less marked. 2,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Ocampo

Ocampo is a young project on Tenerife's volcanic northeast, started by Jonatan García Lima after encouragement from the López Díaz family. 12 hectares of reddish, volcanic soil between 200 and 800 meters elevation, planted with indigenous grapes and worked using the traditional 'rastra' pruning method. The 2022 debut was impressive; 2023 even more so. Welcome to Tenerife's next-generation winemakers, thinking differently about terroir in the Atlantic wind.
