A 1995 Barolo from Mondoca, a tiny parcel at the top of Bussia Soprana that yields only around 3,500 bottles. Oddero, a historic estate based in La Morra now run by the Oddero women, made this the traditional way: a long maceration and three years in big old oak botti, no shortcuts. Thirty years on, the Nebbiolo has moved fully into its tertiary register, tar and dried rose, balsamic, sweet leather. Honest note: this bottle's labels are tattered and worn, exactly what you'd expect from a mature Barolo of this age, and no reflection on what's inside. A living, fully mature classic.

Robert Parker

88 points

"The 1995 Barolo Mondoca di Bussia Soprana exhibits a smoky ashtray-like nose with notes of cedar, leather, and dried herbs and fruits. As the wine sat in the glass, the classic tar and rose petal concoction emerged. This is an old style, rustic Barolo with an evolved plum/garnet color, hard tannin, and a lot of character and spice. It should drink well for 10-12 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Oddero

Super fresh, glowing Barolo from a 200-year legacy. Poderi Oddero dates to the 1700s and released its first bottled Barolo in 1878. Now run by sixth and seventh generations (Mariavittoria and Mariacristina and their children), they're certified organic and own some of Barolo's best crus: Bussia, Brunate, Vignarionda. The wines pop with bright red fruit and mineral finesse—drinkability with authority.
