In Barolo a few dozen meters can change everything, and Oddero's Villero shows it. This Castiglione Falletto parcel sits right next to the family's Rocche di Castiglione vines, but the soil is very different: tougher and more compact, with more clay and limestone. The family's view is that Villero makes the rounder, juicier wine of the two, warm-toned and dark-fruited, while Rocche runs long, vertical and mineral. A nice bit of trivia: the vineyard once belonged to Ferdinando Vignolo Lutati, an agriculture professor from Castiglione Falletto and one of the first people to analyze the scientific makeup of the local soils. Oddero is about as old-guard as Barolo gets. The family is mentioned in La Morra as far back as the 1700s. Mariacristina Oddero runs it today, with the seventh generation coming up behind her. 2008 was also the year the estate began experimenting with organic farming, starting by dropping chemical weed control. This is a back-vintage bottle of 100% Nebbiolo from a top cru, made by a classic house, and a chance to see where Villero has landed after years in the bottle.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2008 Barolo Villero is the most polished of the four 2008 Baroli I tasted. An open, spiced bouquet leads to layers of expressive dark fruit in this harmonious mid-weight Barolo. There is plenty of muscle and tannin here, but those elements are nicely balanced throughout. Spice and floral notes reappear on the finish, adding an element of much-needed lift to this otherwise massively tannic wine." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Spearmint leads off, with cherry, tobacco and earth notes following through. This is concentrated and juicy in texture, almost chewy, offering firm tannins and an echo of mint on the finish. Turns more elegant with air. Best from 2016 through 2032."

More about Oddero

Super fresh, glowing Barolo from a 200-year legacy. Poderi Oddero dates to the 1700s and released its first bottled Barolo in 1878. Now run by sixth and seventh generations (Mariavittoria and Mariacristina and their children), they're certified organic and own some of Barolo's best crus: Bussia, Brunate, Vignarionda. The wines pop with bright red fruit and mineral finesse—drinkability with authority.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic Barolo from a traditional house: dark cherry, plum and violet, with the tar, dried herbs and leather that Nebbiolo typically develops with bottle age. Villero usually shows the rounder, juicier, darker-fruited side of Castiglione Falletto. It's full-bodied, with firm but polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish.
