Robert Moncuit, Champagne Extra Brut Les Grand Cru, 2021

A vintage Grand Cru Champagne from a grower in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, made by the family that farms the chalk itself and without the price tag the Grand Cru name usually brings. Robert Moncuit began bottling under his own name in 1928. Today his grandson Pierre Amillet runs the estate. Their focus is narrow on purpose: Grand Cru Chardonnay from the chalky soils of Le Mesnil and neighboring Oger. They farm without herbicides or pesticides, which is organic in practice, though the estate is not certified. In the cellar, the house relies on oak barrels and patience: the wines rest undisturbed on their lees, malolactic fermentation happens naturally, and nothing is filtered or chaptalized. This 2021 is an Extra Brut, so the low dosage puts the Chardonnay and the chalk up front instead of hiding them behind sugar.

More about Robert Moncuit

Chalk is the name of the game at Champagne Robert Moncuit — hardly a surprise, considering the many plots they own, in some of the most esteemed parcels of the Côte des Blancs. They've got a 2 hectare plot in Mesnil's Les Chétillons, a vineyard made famous by Pierre Peters (although you'd need a good deal of luck, and deep pockets, to find a bottle of that particular wine). The key element to this site's distinct minerality? You guessed it — chalk. To better harness the incredible terroir they have, the family chooses to vinify all cuvées entirely in stainless steel and neutral oak, as they feel anything else would muddy the bright and fresh minerality. The estate was founded in the late 19th century, but has only been imported stateside since 2000. From their top bottlings to his entry level cuvées, Robert Moncuit is one of our favorite growers.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters on the half shell, scallop crudo with citrus and olive oil, warm gougères, aged Comté, or a buttery lobster roll.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers over a chalky, saline minerality, with a fine, persistent mousse. Time in oak and natural malolactic typically add hints of brioche and hazelnut and a rounder, medium-bodied texture. The low Extra Brut dosage keeps the finish bone-dry, taut and long.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
