Weingut Peter Lauer was founded in 1830 in Ayl on the Saar River in the Mosel. Now in its fifth generation, the estate is run by Florian Lauer (who took over in 2006) alongside his father Peter. Admitted to the VDP in 2013. The estate farms 8-12 hectares of steep slate vineyards. The Stirn vineyard sits at the summit ridge of Ayler Kupp with south-facing exposure and 65% slope inclination on stony slate soils. 100% Riesling only, 100% spontaneous fermentation, aged in wooden barrels. "Fass No. 15" refers to the specific barrel. Sustainable farming without herbicides or synthetic chemicals; Florian deliberately avoids organic certification because he rejects copper use.

More about Peter Lauer

The Saar's excellent, affordable rising star. Florian Lauer (fifth generation, admitted to the VDP in 2013) has made his family estate a reference point for serious German Riesling at prices that don't require a second mortgage. They farm organically, ferment native yeast, employ no fining agents, and release wines—especially the incredible value Barrel entries—that prove great terroir transcends pretension.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
