A classic vintage of one of the Northern Rhône's most adored Syrahs, now drinking beautifully. The Gonon brothers, Pierre and Jean, farm the steep granite hillsides of Mauves at the heart of Saint-Joseph, directly across from Hermitage and on the same granitic bedrock. Organic farming (chemical-free since 2004; certified later), hand harvesting and native-yeast fermentation give their Syrah a hallmark purity and finesse rather than weight. The 2016 was a balanced, well-regarded Northern Rhône vintage, and Gonon's version threads ripeness and freshness with real precision; nearly a decade on, it has gained savory, complex maturity. Smoke, black olive and cracked pepper define the style. A cult wine, scarce and worth grabbing whenever you see it.
