This is the easiest way into one of white Burgundy's most admired cellars: Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey giving Aligoté, Burgundy's long-overlooked second white grape, the same fastidious care he gives his Chassagne and Puligny. PYCM has long championed Burgundy's so-called lesser terroirs and made incredible wines from them, and a bottle like this is where that conviction pays off for the rest of us. He was an early master of a leaner, less oaky white Burgundy style (larger barrels, no lees-stirring, earlier picking, aiming for chiseled precision), which is why Jancis Robinson once headlined a piece on him "Making Chassagne more like Riesling." Aligoté's natural brightness suits that approach perfectly. The vines grow on clay and limestone soils. Pierre-Yves, the eldest son of Marc Colin, made the wine at his father's domaine from 1994 to 2005 before starting his own with his wife Caroline Morey, and their sons Mathis and Clément are now joining them. This 2018 is a chance to see what a few years in bottle do for the grape in expert hands.

Jancis Robinson

16.5 points

"People are getting more interested in Aligoté', says Colin-Morey. 'Since 2017 we keep the grapes', from his own 55-year-old vines in Cormot in the Hautes-Côtes. Slightly pink skins. Unfiltered. No stirring on this or any of his whites. Herbal steely nose, a touch of pear. Tight, piercing freshness with a lovely herbal direction. Long and tight. Steely finish." —Julia Harding MW

More about Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey (PYCM)

One of Burgundy's benchmark winemakers. Since establishing his 13-hectare domaine in 2001, PYCM has become a reference point for white Burgundy: less oak (bigger barrels), no lees-stirring, earlier picking, aiming for chiseled precision rather than fat richness. Ranked with Coche, Lafon, and Leflaive at the pinnacle, his Chassagne-Montrachets and Meursaults taste crystalline and pure.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Warm gougères, raw oysters, moules marinières, jambon persillé, trout with brown butter and almonds, fresh goat cheese on toast, or a classic kir-free apéritif spread of radishes and salted butter.

Tasting Profile

A dry white with a light-to-medium body and Aligoté's signature bright, lively acidity. Expect citrus, green apple and a stony, slightly savory edge rather than obvious oak. With a few years in bottle, the texture may have softened a little around that crisp core. The finish is clean, tangy and mineral.
