2014 was a hard year across most of Europe, but Barbaresco was the exception, and Montestefano is a great way to see why. Produttori del Barbaresco calls it probably the most Barolo-like cru in the appellation. June and July brought frequent, heavy and very localised rain. Even so, Barbaresco's total growing-season rainfall came to about a third of the rest of Piemonte's and about half of Barolo's, and dry, sunny weather carried a late harvest from October 8 to 22. That suits Montestefano: its grapes hold up well to rain, and it's usually the last vineyard in Barbaresco to be picked. The slope faces south to south-east at 230–280 metres on some of the most calcium-rich soil in the zone, which the co-op credits for the wine's powerful tannins, and the extra heat gives full body and an almost meaty texture. Produttori, who first bottled Montestefano on its own in 1974, makes it the unhurried, old-school way. They expected their 2014s to be medium-bodied but well balanced, with a mineral finish and long ageing potential. That makes this the house powerhouse in a more poised mood, here in magnum, the format collectors prize for slow ageing, from a lineup that's still among the best values in cellar-worthy wine anywhere. The label is bin-stained, which is only a cosmetic flaw.

Antonio Galloni

"One of the many highlights in this range, the Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is superb. A big enrobing wine, the Montestefano wraps around the palate with stunning depth. Today, the Montestefano is utterly embryonic, and yet it exudes depth, resonance and pure class. The Montestefano is one of the more complete wines in the range because of the way it deftly balances fruit intensity and structure. Readers will have to be patient, though." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"This is visibly the darkest in color and concentration of this series of wines from the well-known Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative. The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano offers round and supple fruit with dark cherry, blackberry and some easy spice. Once again, the wine is a bit flatter than I had hoped, lacking that extra level of snappy freshness." —Monica Larner

"Mid ruby and a shade brighter than the Montefico. Subtle peppery strawberry and raspberry but not really open yet. Compact and tightly built with lively succulent red fruit on a big foundation of formidable, majestic tannins. Long, precise and powerful yet contained."

Decanter

94 points

"This first-rate Barbaresco cooperative has released a superb set of Riservas, and this is among the very best. It's dense and solid on the nose, infused with cherry and raspberry fruit. Suave and full-bodied, it shows impressive weight and depth, with ripe tannins that contribute texture. The finish is spicy, displaying drive, finesse and length. Excellent balance and ageing potential."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Pure cherry flavors permeate the rich flesh of this red, backed by vibrant acidity and fine tannins. Eucalyptus, earth and tar elements add depth as this cruises to a lingering finish. Fine intensity. Best from 2021 through 2040."

Kerin O'Keefe

96 points

"Forest floor, red-skinned berry, leather and tobacco aromas mingle with a balsamic note. The focused, structured palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, raspberry compote and licorice while a graphite note backs up the finish. A backbone of fine-grained tannins and bright acidity gives it an age-worthy structure. Drink 2021–2034." —Kerin O'Keefe

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Hand-cut tajarin with butter and shaved truffle; risotto with porcini; braised beef cheeks or brasato al Barolo; roast venison loin with juniper; pheasant or guinea fowl roasted with pancetta.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Barbaresco Nebbiolo profile in its most structured form: roses, tar and violets over red cherry, with savoury, earthy depth. Typically full-bodied and firmly tannic, with lively acidity and a long, mineral finish. Think of it as a Barolo-like Barbaresco that stays graceful rather than heavy, and is built for long ageing.
