This is a 1999 Riserva from Montestefano, the cru Produttori del Barbaresco calls probably the Barbaresco most reminiscent of Barolo, made in a year the co-op itself rates five stars. They call 1999 a truly memorable vintage, with excellent conditions all round and full-bodied wines of extraordinary aromatic intensity. Montestefano's slope faces south and runs hotter than its neighbours. The producer says that extra heat gives the cru its full body and its almost meaty texture. Their shorthand is tar and roses rather than violets. The vines grow on calcareous limestone, and Produttori has bottled the site on its own since 1974. 1999 is one of the years they made it. These single-vineyard Riservas are among the best values in cellar-worthy wine anywhere. A back-vintage bottle is a rare chance to taste the powerhouse of the range with a quarter-century behind it.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"One of the more evolved wines in the range, the 1999 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano has never really blossomed in bottle, although it has held at a fairly stable plateau of near full maturity for a number of years. Cedar, smoke, earthiness and mushrooms open up in the glass. As has often been the case with the Montestefano, the aromatics are more forward and oxidative than the palate suggests. I can see the 1999 holding well for at least a few more years based on its density and tannin structure, although there is little to indicate the wine will improve from here." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 1999 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano, with a plum, and mineral nose, is the most solid and dense of the group, powerful and focused in character, shapely and intense right through to its long finish." —Daniel Thomases

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, braised beef cheek, roast venison or hare, tajarin with shaved white truffle, aged Castelmagno and Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Montestefano profile: tar and roses over red cherry and dried herbs, with a full body and almost meaty texture that leans toward Barolo. Tannins are firm but ripe, acidity bright, and the finish long and savoury without feeling heavy. Built to age, this style typically softens toward leather, earth and truffle.
