Serious Alvarinho from the excellence territory of Monção e Melgaço—Portugal's northernmost wine region, where the variety reaches its peak expression. Founded in 1988 with just 3 hectares of Alvarinho, now 12 hectares on granite terraces. Extended lees contact and rare decanting techniques (unusual for Vinho Verde) give this Reserva uncommon texture and complexity. Named Producer of the Year 2019 by Grandes Escolhas.

More about Quinta do Regueiro

Quinta do Regueiro is proof that Vinho Verde can be a serious, age-worthy white. The estate sits in Melgaço, at Portugal's far northern tip, where the Minho river separates it from Galicia, and its focus is Alvarinho, the grape the Spanish call Albariño.

It's a young, family-run estate. Paulo Cerdeira Rodrigues, who makes the wines and runs the business with his sister Anabela, planted the first vines in the late 1980s and released the first vintage, about 4,000 bottles, in 1999. Today there are around 12 hectares of vines on granite in the Monção e Melgaço subregion, where the hills block much of the Atlantic rain and a warmer, drier climate ripens Alvarinho more fully than elsewhere in Vinho Verde. The grapes are picked by hand.

The range starts with a crisp Alvarinho-Trajadura blend and the Reserva, a saline, citrusy Alvarinho that has long been one of our summertime staples. Further up are Barricas, fermented and aged in French oak, and Jurássico, a blend of old vintages held in stainless steel for more than a decade. Across the board the wines show the hallmarks of the place: citrus and orchard fruit, a smoky, granitic edge and a salty freshness that holds up to food, and to time.
