If La Landonne is all muscle and grit, Côte Blonde is its graceful twin—lighter in color, lifted in aroma, but every bit as profound. Rostaing’s 2022 vintage shows the cru in full bloom: red berries, violets, smoked herbs, and that signature tapenade note that reminds you you’re in the Northern Rhône.

There’s a dash of Viognier in the mix (as tradition allows), which adds just the right touch of perfume and softness. But don’t mistake elegance for weakness—there’s structure here too, wrapped in silk rather than iron. The balance is pitch-perfect, the finish long and laced with spice.

Rostaing has long mastered the art of tension between power and finesse, and this Côte Blonde may be one of the most charming examples yet. Drink it young with a long decant—or stash it away and let the magic build over time.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2022 Côte-Rôtie Côte Blonde reveals intense aromas of cedar, blackberry, black cherry, graphite and a slice of orange rind. Full-bodied and structured by firm tannins with a hint of vanilla, the 2022 provides marked wood tannins that slightly detract from its elegance. Built like a brick wall, the Côte Blonde will require the most time to come around among Rostaing’s 2022s. Fermented with 100% whole clusters, it promises great complexity" —Vinous

Decanter

95 points

"Gently fragrant jasmine and rose, very Côte Blonde in terms of aromatics. Soft, velvety mouthfeel with flavours of blackberry, cassis and more rose. Slightly higher alcohol and lower acidity than a typical year, not as tense and upright as some recent vintages, making for a luxurious, rich style of Côte-Rôtie. Four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak, limited new oak, natural yeasts and as many stems as possible."

More about Rene Rostaing

René Rostaing was a notary who fell in love with Côte-Rôtie in the 1970s when vineyard prices were laughably cheap. He bought parcels in the two best lieux-dits—Côte Blonde and La Landonne—and made classical Syrah the way his uncle Marius Gentaz had taught him. No high-tech gimmicks, traditional aging, very little new oak. His son Pierre now runs the 20-acre estate, producing some of the most mineral, age-worthy Côte-Rôties out there. This is what conservative winemaking looks like when you start with premium fruit.

Tasting Profile

Powerful Côte-Rôtie with dark cherry, smoked meat, and black pepper aromatics. Full body with firm tannins, concentrated fruit, peppery spice, and a structured, long finish.

Rostaing inherited prize parcels in Cote Rotie from his father-in-law, Albert Dervieux, and uncle, Marius Gentaz. He went on to become a legend of his own. His son, Pierre, took over in 2015 and pushed the domaine in a more traditional direction. The high quality has gotten even higher.
