Classic, perfumed Côte-Rôtie from a master of the appellation, now showing graceful maturity. René Rostaing's Ampodium (formerly labeled Cuvée Classique) is his estate blend, assembled from many parcels scattered across Côte-Rôtie, all 100% Syrah and aged in seasoned barrels with only a touch of new oak so the terroir does the talking. The name nods to the Provençal word for Ampuis, the village at the heart of the appellation. The 2009 came from a warm, ripe Northern Rhône vintage, and after fifteen-plus years it has unfurled into a savory, complex wine where Côte-Rôtie's signature floral and bacon-fat notes meet mature, secondary depth. A benchmark grower's wine at its peak.

More about Rene Rostaing

René Rostaing was a notary who fell in love with Côte-Rôtie in the 1970s when vineyard prices were laughably cheap. He bought parcels in the two best lieux-dits—Côte Blonde and La Landonne—and made classical Syrah the way his uncle Marius Gentaz had taught him. No high-tech gimmicks, traditional aging, very little new oak. His son Pierre now runs the 20-acre estate, producing some of the most mineral, age-worthy Côte-Rôties out there. This is what conservative winemaking looks like when you start with premium fruit.
