La Viaillère doesn’t get the headlines like La Landonne or Côte Blonde, but in Rostaing’s hands, it’s a sleeper hit—a Syrah with real edge, drive, and aromatic punch. The vineyard’s high slopes and rocky soils give the wine lift and minerality, while the 2022 vintage layers in dark fruit, cracked pepper, and wild herbs.

It’s a little wilder, a little more untamed than the others in the lineup—less polished maybe, but full of personality. The tannins are firm, the acidity is lively, and the finish brings that iron-and-olive twist that Northern Rhône fans chase.

If you love Côte-Rôtie and want something a bit off the main road—but still deeply serious—La Viaillère is your bottle. Cellar it if you want, but it’s already singing with a good decant and the right plate of roasted lamb or mushrooms.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The outstanding 2022 Côte-Rôtie La Viallière presents intense black fruit, spice and cedar tones, with a hint of licorice and fresh violet. Concentrated and powerful, it’s a classy Côte-Rôtie with attitude and focus. Tightly structured by firm tannins, the 2022 will benefit from four more years in bottle." —Nicolas Greinacher

"Cask sample. Lovely nose, some violet and blue fruits as well as darker fruits beneath. The palate has tension and plenty of vertical tannins as well. Grippy and layered and attractive – youthful, stony, perfumed and tense."

Decanter

95 points

"Soft impression on the palate, though does have the Viallière elegance and violet aroma. Good concentration, slightly warming alcohol, velvety tannins. Actually quite robust in tannic weight on the finish, but acidity is fairly gentle. From 90-year-old vines, the oldest of the domaine, from which they take cuttings for replantings."

More about Rene Rostaing

René Rostaing was a notary who fell in love with Côte-Rôtie in the 1970s when vineyard prices were laughably cheap. He bought parcels in the two best lieux-dits—Côte Blonde and La Landonne—and made classical Syrah the way his uncle Marius Gentaz had taught him. No high-tech gimmicks, traditional aging, very little new oak. His son Pierre now runs the 20-acre estate, producing some of the most mineral, age-worthy Côte-Rôties out there. This is what conservative winemaking looks like when you start with premium fruit.

Tasting Profile

Elegant Côte-Rôtie with dark cherry, white pepper, and floral notes. Balanced structure with refined tannins, bright acidity, and a nuanced finish showing herbs and minerals.

Rostaing inherited prize parcels in Cote Rotie from his father-in-law, Albert Dervieux, and uncle, Marius Gentaz. He went on to become a legend of his own. His son, Pierre, took over in 2015 and pushed the domaine in a more traditional direction. The high quality has gotten even higher.
