Varietal Viognier from one of Côte-Rôtie's great classicist growers, off old-vine parcels that sit immediately next to Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu — the same slopes, without the appellation name on the label. That adjacency is the whole story here: Rostaing isn't dabbling in white wine, the domaine also farms a tiny Condrieu parcel in the Cote Bonnette lieu-dit that turns out some of that appellation's most refined Viognier, so this grape is core to the house. Pierre Rostaing, who took over day-to-day from his father René, keeps the traditionalist approach his family is known for: the site does the talking. Les Lezardes is made in both a white and a red version — this is the white, dry and perfumed, and it's about as affordable a way into serious Northern Rhône Viognier as exists. If you've ever balked at what Condrieu costs, start here.

Robert Parker

90 points

"Entirely crafted from Viognier, the 2024 IGP Collines Rhodaniennes Les Lézardes Viognier reveals aromas of honeysuckle, white fruits and baked pear, accented by delicate floral nuances. Moderately weighted and round, it is delicately juicy and fresh, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Matured in stainless steel and without malolactic fermentation, it preserves admirable tension and aromatic clarity." —Yohan Castaing

More about Rene Rostaing

René Rostaing was a notary who fell in love with Côte-Rôtie in the 1970s when vineyard prices were laughably cheap. He bought parcels in the two best lieux-dits—Côte Blonde and La Landonne—and made classical Syrah the way his uncle Marius Gentaz had taught him. No high-tech gimmicks, traditional aging, very little new oak. His son Pierre now runs the 20-acre estate, producing some of the most mineral, age-worthy Côte-Rôties out there. This is what conservative winemaking looks like when you start with premium fruit.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with apricots, scallops in brown butter, Thai green curry, pork loin with quince, or a washed-rind cheese like Reblochon.

Tasting Profile

Dry white with Viognier's signature perfume — apricot, white peach, honeysuckle and a touch of orange blossom. Medium to full-bodied and rounded on the palate, with enough acidity to keep it lively rather than heavy. Finishes clean and floral, with a faint stony bitterness.
