A graceful, fragrant Côte-Rôtie from one of the appellation's reference growers, drinking at maturity. René Rostaing builds his Ampodium (once called Cuvée Classique) from many small Syrah parcels across Côte-Rôtie, raising it in mostly seasoned barrels to keep the focus on site rather than oak; the name comes from the old Provençal name for Ampuis. The 2010 is a celebrated Northern Rhône vintage, prized for its balance, freshness and structure, and that combination shows here: even after a decade and a half, the wine keeps its vibrancy while layering in savory, mature complexity. Floral, smoky and refined, this is Côte-Rôtie at its classic best.

More about Rene Rostaing

René Rostaing was a notary who fell in love with Côte-Rôtie in the 1970s when vineyard prices were laughably cheap. He bought parcels in the two best lieux-dits—Côte Blonde and La Landonne—and made classical Syrah the way his uncle Marius Gentaz had taught him. No high-tech gimmicks, traditional aging, very little new oak. His son Pierre now runs the 20-acre estate, producing some of the most mineral, age-worthy Côte-Rôties out there. This is what conservative winemaking looks like when you start with premium fruit.
