From Champ de Cour, considered Richard Rottiers' best terroir, a deep, south-facing site of pink granite right under the windmill at Thorins in the heart of Moulin-a-Vent. Rottiers founded his domaine in 2007 and farms old vines organically, making serious, structured cru Beaujolais from Gamay that's a world away from the simple, fruity stereotype. Champ de Cour's deep clay-and-granite soils give a wine with surprising density and grip, raised in barrel and built to age like a fine Burgundy. The 2013 was a cool, classic vintage, and at this maturity the wine has gained earthy, savory complexity while keeping Gamay's fresh lift. Drink now with a decant. A revelation for anyone who thinks Beaujolais can't be serious.

"The 2013 Moulin-à-Vent Champ de Cour, opened by Rottiers after tasting through his 2020s, has a beautiful, very harmonious bouquet of pure black plum mixed with wild strawberry, orange peel and crushed stone. The palate is wonderfully balanced with filigreed tannins, silky-smooth and harmonious, leading to a finish replete with leather-tinged, sappy red fruit. Drinking perfectly now.
