Asili is widely considered Barbaresco's greatest vineyard—a perfectly exposed hillside in the commune of Barbaresco where Nebbiolo achieves its most refined expression. Roagna's parcel, farmed by five generations of the family, produces wines of extraordinary elegance and longevity. The "Vecchie Viti" bottling comes from their oldest vines, vinified traditionally with extended maceration and aging in large oak. This is Barbaresco at its most profound: perfumed, complex, and built to evolve over decades. Decant young or cellar for the long haul.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 96
"The 2020 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti offers up crushed red berry fruit, spice, menthol, new leather, licorice and blood orange. Hints of kirsch, hard candy and star anise appear later, adding an exotic flair. The 2020 has it all—finesse and power wrapped into a super-classic mid-weight frame." -Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

WS 96
"This red wine is fragrant and open, with flavours of rosehip, sour cherry, leather, white pepper and minerals, as well as a hint of green tea. It is characterised by a lively acidity, while the tannins leave a chalky sensation in the long aftertaste. Overall, it shows excellent finesse, balance and intensity."

Kerin O'Keefe

WE 96
"Forest floor, new leather, lavender and camphor are just some of the aromas you'll find on the gorgeous Roagna 2020 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti. Combing finesse and structure, the ethereally elegant, delicious palate delivers succulent red cherry, wild raspberry, blood orange and licorice before closing on crushed mint. Bright acidity lends racy tension while taut, ultra-refined tannins offer seamless support. Drink through 2040." -Kerin O'Keefe

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard
A small (.22 hectare) parcel in a prime location in the middle of the Asili hill..

South-southwest exposure.
Soil
Asili is particularly rich in limestone and marl mixed with strands of reddish yellow sands.
Viticulture
The vines in this parcel are all at least fifty years old -- many much molder. He maintains the old vines as long as possible but whenever he needs to replace a vine it is propagated from a vine in the same parcel.
Vinification
Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 80-90 days.
Aging
The wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release.
