The Côte des Bar in the Aube is Champagne's southern frontier — cooler, more remote, and defined by Kimmeridgian limestone that shares its geology with Chablis. Robert Barbichon works this terroir in the grower tradition, farming estate fruit and bottling with no dosage (Brut Nature) for the most honest possible expression of the land. These Aube growers are making some of the most exciting small-production Champagne available today, and Barbichon's Brut Nature is an excellent entry into that conversation.

Robert Parker

93 points

"A blend of the 2019 and 2018 vintages and composed entirely of Chardonnay from Gyé-sur-Seine, Robert Barbichon’s NV Brut Nature wafts from the glass with an expressive bouquet of crisp Anjou pear, buttery pastry, lemon oil and white flowers. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, concentrated and deep, with a racy spine of acidity, a generous core of fruit and a long, penetratingly saline, lemon-inflected finish. Around one-fifth of the juice was vinified in wood. Harmonious and demonstrative, it will drink very well out of gates." —Kristaps Karklins

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
