This is Napa Cabernet from the man who got Napa calling it Cabernet: Robert Mondavi's 1992 Reserve, now more than thirty years past harvest. Mondavi founded his winery in 1966 with a simple goal, to make Napa Valley wines that could stand among the world's finest. He also talked his neighbours into putting grape names like Cabernet Sauvignon on their labels, the way other fine wines of the world already did. (Every "Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon" label on the shelf owes him a little something.) He took his inspiration from the Old World but brought in new winemaking techniques. A back-vintage bottle like this is the real test of that 1966 ambition. The question isn't how the wine showed on release but how it holds up three decades on. Stand it upright for a day before opening and pour gently, because older reds tend to throw sediment.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of mature Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: blackcurrant and plum fruit softening into cedar, tobacco, leather and earthy, savoury notes. With long bottle age, the body typically stays medium to full, the tannins turn silky and fresh acidity keeps it lively, finishing long and dry. Think mature Bordeaux, with a little more ripe fruit.
