This is the bottle that gets you into Roches Neuves: Cuvée Domaine is the Saumur-Champigny Thierry Germain makes for freshness and immediate pleasure, not for the cellar. Germain is a great outsider story. He grew up in Saint-Émilion, came to Saumur in the 1990s and trained with the Foucault brothers of the legendary Clos Rougeard. Local growers were wary of him at first, but he won them round. He and Marie Germain took over the estate in 1991. They went fully organic in the late 1990s and moved to biodynamics in the early 2000s under François Bouchet, the same consultant who advised Romanée-Conti, Leflaive and Leroy. Getting that kind of farming in a bottle meant for a Tuesday-night dinner is what makes this such an easy way into one of the Loire's great Cabernet Franc estates.

Tasting Profile

Expect the bright, easygoing side of Saumur-Champigny Cabernet Franc: red berries and crunchy red cherry, with a touch of the grape's leafy, peppery herbal character and a chalky edge from the limestone. Light-bodied and juicy, with fresh acidity and soft, fine tannins, it typically finishes clean and dry. Think Cabernet Franc with the easy drinkability of a good Beaujolais.
