This is a resurrection in a bottle—literally. Schioppettino, Friuli's indigenous red, was officially extinct in 1970. Ronchi di Cialla saved it. Paolo and Dina Rapuzzi recovered 70 surviving vines from scattered locations and replanted them, earning the prestigious Risit D'Aur Prize for their conservation work. Now their sons continue the mission with the same organic rigor and minimal intervention philosophy. The 2021 vintage, warm and favorable across Friuli, brought concentrated fruit and excellent balance. Cialloarosso (meaning "red from Cialla") delivers juicy dark berries, wild herbs, earthy charm, and a structure that speaks to the Ponca soils—that crumbling mixture of marl and sandstone forged by millions of years of Alpine tectonics. There's history in this wine: it's the only expression of this specific cru thanks to Ronchi's monopole status. It's also uncompromising: unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulfite, made to pair with real food and prove that nearly-extinct doesn't mean inferior.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2021 Ciallarosso is a total pleasure, wafting up from the glass with a perfumed bouquet of lavender, roses, subtle hints of pepper and wild blueberries. It sweeps across the palate with lifted textures, energetic yet refined with crunchy mineral tones and floral-laced red berry fruits. This tapers off with medium length and lightly tannic, leaving the palate stained in youthful concentration as violet inner florals fade." —Eric Guido

More about Ronchi di Cialla

Paolo and Dina Rapuzzi founded this estate in 1970 with one goal: make great aging wines from indigenous Friuli varieties. Their sons revived the nearly extinct Schioppettino grape and have made it their signature. These are wines with real backbone and personality.

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

Varietal NotesRefosco & SchioppettinoVineyardSourced from the estate vineyards of Cjastenet and Roncj.OrientationCjastenet has a south-southwest exposure at 150-200 meters and Roncj has a south-southeast exposure at 165-180 meters.SoilTheir soil is a mix of marl (clay & lime) with marly limestone. It is a particular type of marl with a high pH. They feel that this especially high pH in the soil adds to the potential for aging in the wine.ViticultureBoth Ivan and his brother, Pierpaolo, are entomologists, and so biodiversity is incredibly important to them. The winery is certified "Biodiversity Friend" which is an organization that surveys and protects biodiversity, ensuring that the production process does not lead to a loss of biodiversity and that the producer is committed to improving the quality of the environment in which it operates.VinificationVinified in stainless steel with a maceration of about two weeks.AgingThe Ciallarosso is aged in cask for about one year followed by one year in bottle before release.
