Mark Angeli is a legend of natural Loire wine — he calls his place a ferme (a farm), not a domaine, and famously walked away from the Anjou appellation to bottle everything as Vin de France on his own terms. Everything is farmed biodynamically (Demeter-certified). La Rosee is his fresh, juicy rose, made in tiny quantities and built for drinking young and cold. It's the kind of bottle that disappears fast on a warm afternoon. Chill it down and pour generously.

More about Ferme de la Sansonniere (Mark Angeli)

Mark Angeli is one of the founding figures of natural wine in the Loire, a chemistry student turned stonemason whose dry Chenin Blancs helped show what Anjou could do when nobody was in a hurry.

He bought La Ferme de la Sansonnière, at Thouarcé in the Layon valley, around 1990, with roughly seven hectares across Anjou, Coteaux du Layon and Bonnezeaux, and farmed it biodynamically from the start, when that was still rare. The vines are bush-trained and unwired, the soils (mostly schist, with clay and sand) are worked by horse rather than tractor, and treatments go on by hand.

In the cellar, grapes go through an old vertical wooden press, ferment with native yeasts and age for a long time in old barrels, with very little sulfur. Angeli made celebrated sweet Bonnezeaux for years before turning to dry wines from all his plots. After the appellation tasting panels refused some of his wines, among them the Grolleau rosé he renamed Rosé d'un Jour, he left the system, and everything is now bottled as Vin de France.

His son Martial now runs the estate. Chenin Blanc is the heart of it, alongside Grolleau Gris and Cabernet for the rosé and reds. These are textured, saline, deeply alive wines that reward patience and an open mind.
